No one likes to get honked at, but getting violent is probably not the answer.
A driver got out of his car and hit a bus after being honked at, according to a recent post on Facebook group Singapore Roads Accident.
The incident involving the driver and bus number 81 took place along Hougang Avenue 3 on November 29 at around 10:20 pm.
Video taken by a passenger on the double-decker bus shows the driver exiting his Audi S5 and charging towards the bus behind him.
He then swings at the windshield of the bus, causing a loud crash that causes the passengers to scream in surprise.
According to the passenger, the driver hit the bus four to five times before driving away.
After watching the clip, many netizens called for the driver to be punished, expressing their disgust at his behavior.
“We cannot tolerate people who have road rage and bully others,” said one Facebook user.
Another stated that drivers who succumb to road rage should not be driving “for the safety of all other road users”.
“(He was just shouted at and he’s already) angry… that’s how vehicles signal and communicate,” one netizen commented.
Other netizens also felt that the driver’s actions may have left him with more than just a bruised ego.
“Not only will he be fined for likely property damage, but his hands will be sore,” said one Redditor.
In response to AsiaOne’s queries, SBS Transit spokesperson Grace Wu said the bus service was hampered by a car not moving forward despite the green light in its favor and other vehicles in front of it pulling away.
“Our bus captain honked the horn to alert the car driver, who still did not drive away, but instead got out of his car, walked towards the bus and bumped into the windshield,” Wu explained.
“He then got back into his car and drove forward, but stopped at the red traffic light. He then repeated his action by hitting the bus and then drove away when the traffic lights turned green.”
While their captain and passengers were unharmed and the journey resumed shortly afterwards, the public transport company said they will not tolerate acts of violence or intimidation against their bus captains.
SBS Transit has filed a complaint against the motorist, Wu said.
